The STAR Approach to Interview Questions

You know that telling your story well in a job interview means striking the right balance between confidence and humility when singing your own praises. Hiring managers want to hear about your successes, but without braggadocio.

The STAR approach is one we like for structuring career stories. It goes like this:

S: Talk about a situation you had to deal with at work.

T: Briefly explain the tasks you were given to complete.

A: What was an action you took?

R: And the result that happened.

There is also an L inferred here:

L: What did you learn from it?

We typically advise job seekers we work with to have a few such stories handy as they head into a job interview. Practicing in advance makes it easy for them to roll off the tongue in the moment — with both confidence and humility.
